Our Yugoslavia Staunton originates from the chess set designed for the 1950 Chess Olympiad held in Dubrovnik,Yugoslavia. This unique and handsome Staunton design has since become a favorite for chess players around the world and one of our most popular chess sets. We made a few minor changes such as adding a tapered base to enhance appearance and balance of the chess pieces while maintaining the integrity of the intended design. You'll love playing with this chess set whether it's a casual game at home or a tournament match.

I bought this set on sale in January 2012. I was amazed when I opened the box and first held each piece, so desirable and at such a modest price. It's the knight that makes this set unique, with it's curved neck and broad shoulders giving taste to the usual design. You could tuck this set away as a treasure or you could play it everyday. Either way it's a superb set to own.

This is a truly superb product. The ebonizing of my new set is so good that I had to hold the black pieces under direct sunlight to distinguish them from genuine ebony. They don't quite have that deep luster found only with ebony but they're very close with a deep and even blackness. And the proportions of the pieces are just right, the way a chess set ought to look. And heavy weighting, too. Note: The kings' base in my set is about 1.75". not 1.625" as advertised.
